Yoni Eshpar: How did human rights become the agenda of the left alone?

December 12, 2012. The director of Gisha’s public department wrote an op-ed (Hebrew) for Makor Rishon in honor of international Human Rights Day.

From the op-ed:
“Human rights were not defined with the goal of providing solutions for all of humanity’s problems. They cannot replace politics as the arena for forging all the necessary compromises between different concepts about what makes a good life, a just society and a well-functioning government. They are not a blueprint for utopia, but rather an inoculation against catastrophe. So how did human rights go from here to becoming the agenda of the left alone?
