Changes to Gaza’s fishing zone implemented by Israel since January 2019

In the early hours of June 13, 2019, Israel began imposing a full maritime closure in Gaza’s territorial waters for the third time this year. In fact, in 2019 alone, Israel has implemented no less than 15 changes to the demarcation of the fishing zone it enforces off Gaza’s coast.

Many of the changes, including the full closure implemented today, have been openly framed by Israel as a response to incendiary balloons being launched from Gaza. In other words, Israel imposes restrictions on access to Gaza’s sea in response to actions over which fishermen in Gaza have no control, and changes them arbitrarily, at the expense of Gaza’s fishing community, as well as the economy as a whole. This is illegal collective punishment, and must end immediately.
