Application on behalf of six Muslim women from Gaza seeking to pray at al-Aqsa Mosque on the day of al-Isra and al-Maraj (Prophet Muhammad’s ascension to heaven)
On May 21, 2012, Gisha contacted the Gaza DCO with a request to permit six women from Gaza to travel to Jerusalem. The six women wish to pray at al-Aqsa Mosque on the day of al-Isra and al-Maraj. The day marks the nocturnal journey taken by the Prophet Muhammad in which he ascended to heaven from al-Aqsa Mosque to meet God. For this reason, prayer in Jerusalem at al-Aqsa Mosque on this day is particularly important for members of the Muslim faith.
It should be noted that Gisha contacted the authorities on behalf of the same women with a similar request on December 21, 2010, but was met with refusal. A petition filed on the women’s behalf against this refusal was rejected and the appeal in the matter is now pending before the Supreme Court. A hearing is scheduled for July 4, 2012.
