Sunday, May 23, 2021: Gisha condemns Israel’s decision to close Erez and Kerem Shalom Crossings completely “until further notice” in the strongest possible terms. The closing of the crossings is illegal, immoral, and puts lives at risk. The direct repercussions of the decision are that medical patients seeking lifesaving treatment outside the Strip and other urgent humanitarian cases cannot exit, medical personnel and aid workers cannot enter the Strip, and patients stuck outside Gaza after receiving treatment cannot return to their homes. Additionally, the closing of Kerem Shalom Crossing is blocking entry of humanitarian aid and basic supplies such as food and baby formula, medicine and medical equipment, and fuel for Gaza’s power plant. Entry of people and goods via the Israeli-controlled crossings has been blocked almost completely since May 11, causing severe harm to civilians. The closing of the crossings constitutes unacceptable and illegal collective punishment. Conditioning their opening on political developments is egregious and intolerable.
