Gaza’s unemployment rate rises to 31.9% in the third quarter of 2012

December 18, 2012. Gaza’s unemployment rate in the third quarter of 2012 stood at 31.9%, compared with 28.4% in the preceding quarter, as figures published by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics show. The highest unemployment rate was recorded in the Khan Yunis district – 37.5%. In the West Bank, unemployment stands at 20.4%.

The unemployment rate among women in Gaza stands at 57.7%, and for men at 26%. Among young people aged 15-29, the rate is 50.4%. Thirty-eight percent of Gaza’s workforce is employed in the public sector. Salaried workers account for 70.7% of the workforce and 17.9% are self-employed. Five percent are business owners and 6.4% work for a family business without pay.
