Gisha congratulates Adv. Jabareen and Adv. Yakir for winning the “Herman Schwartz Award for Law and Social Justice” and the “Human Rights Defender Prize”.
Gisha – Legal Center for Freedom of Movement congratulates Adalah General Director Adv. Hassan Jabareen for receiving the Herman Schwartz Award for Law and Social Justice. We also wish to congratulate Chief Legal Counsel for the Association for Civil Rights in Israel Adv. Dan Yakir for receiving the Human Rights Defender Prize. The committee’s decision to award the prizes to Advs. Yakir and Jabareen was unanimous. Members of the Committee include legal scholars Yehudit Karp, Bana Shoughry-Badrne, Ed Friedman, Yuval Yavneh and Rachel Liel, New Israel Fund executive director.
Adv. Jabareen is the founder and general director of Adalah – Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel. Among the organization’s achievements: the acceptance of the Zbeidat family into the community town of Rakefet, the revocation of a national priority zoning plan which discriminated against Arabs and the establishment of mother and child clinics in unrecognized Bedouin villages.
Adv. Yakir has been active with the Association for Civil Rights in Israel since 1982. His major achievements include the ruling against the use of physical force during ISA interrogations, the prohibition on racial discrimination in the process of admission into community towns and Ministry of Interior recognition of same sex marriages conducted abroad.
The Herman Schwartz Award for Law and Social Justice is awarded annually by the New Israel Fund to legal scholars for major achievements or exceptional legal intervention towards the promotion of social change and human rights. The Human Rights Defender prize is given by the New Israel Fund to a person or organization for significant achievements in defending human rights in Israel.
