Israeli rights groups welcome return to Human Rights Council
Israel’s decision to take part in today's Universal Periodic Review session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva is welcome.
The Universal Period Review is a relatively new mechanism in which every member of the United Nations participates. The mechanism was established in part in response to claims that the council was systematically singling out certain countries, Israel among them.
Thus far, no country has refused to participate, and Israel has made a good decision to show up, thus avoiding a precedent for human rights violators to evade criticism.
We hope that cooperating with the UPR session expresses recognition of the importance of protecting the human rights of the citizens of Israel, its residents and residents of the territories under its control.
